To find out on which USB port a non-installed printer is connected to, read the following instructions:

The port name (USB001, 002, 003) is not fixed according to the physical port number sequence (the port that is physically available at the back of the printer).

You can understand it better with the following example:

If you connect your first printer (Printer1) to PC’s physical USB port-1, then your computer will detect your printer as USB001. After that if you connect your printer (printer1) to another port of your computer (Physical port-2) then your computer is still assign the same port name (USB001) to your printer – it means, no matter on which port you are connecting your printer it applies the first-come-first-serve method. Keep in mind that it is temporary until you install any printer successfully, it might change.

For the first printer it will assign USB001 port and then 002 for a secondly connected printer and after that USB003 port for the third printer. For latest printers it might be DOT4_001, Dot4_002, Dot_003.

Now, if you connect another printer (printer2) to the same computer on physical port-2 then it will detect as port USB002. Keep in mind that the printer1 is still connected to the physical port 1. It means, it applies the first-come-first-serve method. Keep in mind that it is temporary until you install any printer successfully.

Once the printer is installed successfully, the computer will assign the current port (USB001/002/003) to the printer permanently. Hence, no matter on which port your printer is connected to (after installation), it will show and use the same port name on any of your computer’s USB ports.
